Minas Seed Co-operative Ltd., is the largest grain and oilseed Pedigreed Seed processing, production and R&D company in Atlantic Canada. Based in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, our focus is on post-harvest seed handling; including drying, conditioning and treating of various cereals, oilseed and pulses. We sell directly to commercial producers and provide on-site seed storage for local producers. Minas Seed has been a consistently evolving company and we are filling the newly created position of Operations Manager to help take the company to the next level of growth. This position will be actively involved in the future development of innovative production models, entrepreneurial processing and the assimilation/application of applied research results. The successful candidate will have a vested interest in future opportunities of Atlantic agriculture in the global food economy. This position is located in Canning, Nova Scotia. Only a short drive from Halifax.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and implement all farming operations, including crop planning, planting, maintenance processing and storage of grains and oilseeds
Ensure economical and environmental sustainability of all farm fields and operations; drive profitability through improved crop quality and yield
Manage the Crop Management Program and coordinate field services to achieve program and research trial goals
Assist in the planning and management of on-farm research plots; coordinate the transfer of accurate raw data to test analysts
Prepare and manage budgets and expenditures and maintain concise production records
Oversee and support a small production team to achieve operational goals while maintaining a strong safety track record safety and quality assurance practices are adhered to
Seek opportunities to improve operational processes and efficiencies
Maintain farm machinery, equipment and buildings
Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in operations management in a related field
Post-secondary education in agricultural science program, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
Accredited Seed Grader or ability to obtain accreditation within 12 months of hire
Deep understanding of virus and disease management; accredited Pesticide Applicator is an asset
Significant experience with pre and post harvest handling
Demonstrated leadership skills with a proven record of working safely
Strong communication skills, both spoken and written
Business development experience is an asset
Excellent mechanical ability and aptitude, with ability to troubleshoot
The ability to work in a fast- paced, physically demanding environment, with the ability to work long and variable hours as needed
